Application

When looking for the perfect grass alternative, the best place to start is with it's application. While artificial grass can be installed for a variety of reasons, landscaping is the most obvious and popular choice. This is due to the versatility and low maintenance of synthetic grass. Traffic

When deciding on the perfect fake grass for your yard or patio, the next most important consideration is the traffic. Some artificial grass installments will simply act as an aesthetic and will rarely be walked on, while others will be used for heavy traffic activities such as play or sports areas. It's important to consider whether your installation will be exposed to low, medium, or high traffic activities.

Low traffic areas would include an application for a pool deck, well maintained yard lawn, or patio. Medium traffic areas would be used in play-areas, dog runs, and other moderate activity spaces where children or pets play frequently. Styles

Although there are several types of artificial grass selections on the market, many are made with either polyethylene, nylon, or polypropylene. Polyethylene grass is by far the most premium of the three. Polyethylene grasses are the most natural and appealing to the touch. They are able to withstand heavy traffic and heat, while also maintaining their shape and color. Polyethylene grasses are non-porous so they are also the perfect fit for families with pets. Next up is nylon grass. Nylon grass is considered the strongest type of artificial grass on the market. However, it is rough to the touch and can be rather uncomfortable. Nylon works best for those yards or installations that will be used in heavy traffic areas or in high heat exposure. Many times nylon grass is featured on sports fields or putting greens. Lastly, we have polypropylene grass. Polypropylene grass is hands down the most cost-effective of the three options, however it isn't necessarily the toughest. Polypropylene grasses are not ideal for heavy traffic areas or high heat exposure. They're typically used simply for their aesthetics or for small areas with little to no traffic. Backing Systems

The final, and arguably most important consideration when it comes to your artificial grass installation is the backing. The backing system acts as a skeleton for when you are installing artificial grass. Almost all artificial grass has a two-part backing system: the primary woven backing where each of the grass blades are stitched, and then the secondary backing that holds everything together and helps the fabric lay flat. The key differences in backing systems revolves around drainage and durability. Many systems are perforated, meaning that there are little holes punched into the backing to aid in drainage. This can work as a double edged sword depending on your artificial grass application. For pet owners, more perforation and increased proper drainage is ideal. Meanwhile, more perforation and moisture can aid in weed growth, which can also be a pain.

The second backing coating also plays a large role when it comes to backing systems. Many backing systems are made from urethane or latex. Latex is considered the more cost-effective choice, however it's durability can be easily compromised over time and exposure to moisture. Yarn can begin to be pulled out and bald spots may occur as well. Urethane is the easy choice for high durability and long lasting turf installations, however it can be much more expensive. Urethane backings are also ideal for pet owners as the material is non-absorbent, so no lingering odors will be left behind.
